Esfahan Refinery Increases its Foreign-Currency Revenue through Expanded Butane and LPG Exports

The refinery can now sell and export about 40 LPG tankers and 15 butane tankers per day, with an average net capacity of 23 tons per tanker.

Esfahan Oil Refinery’s storage and export capacity for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and butane has grown significantly with the commissioning of new loading platforms. The refinery can now sell and export about 40 LPG tankers and 15 butane tankers per day, with an average net capacity of 23 tons per tanker.

Daily LPG production at the refinery is roughly 1,200 tons, of which 500–600 tons are allocated to domestic consumption and the remainder offered to export markets. Independent butane exports have also begun after obtaining the necessary permits and are now part of the refinery’s petroleum products export development plan. This marks the first time butane has been supplied and exported by the company.

Previously, in December 2023, spherical storage tanks for propane and butane were commissioned at the refinery, enabling stable inventory management and preventing direct injection of LPG into the fuel network for the first time. Later, in December 2024, six LPG loading platforms and four butane loading platforms were added to operation at the refinery, increasing loading and export capacity.

These measures, while addressing domestic needs, have paved the way for higher foreign-currency earnings through exports of LPG, butane, and other petroleum products.
