CEO of Kharg Petrochemical:

Synthetic ethanol project will bring a fundamental transformation to Kharg Petrochemical

Kharg Petrochemical has not experienced a decline in exports to date and has managed to keep its market share.

Komeil Pourziaei, CEO of Kharg Petrochemical Company, speaking on the sidelines of the company’s extraordinary general meeting held on 16 November, commented on production status: regarding production capacity relative to nameplate capacity, given that the catalyst has entered its fifth year of use, it is natural for methanol output to decline. In addition, production should be evaluated based on the amount of feedstock.

He added that the company’s main concern is securing stable feedstock for its production units. In this regard, and in cooperation with the Iranian Offshore Oil Company (IOOC) and marine equipment teams, necessary planning has been made to return the pipeline to service so as to enable stable feed supply, increase production and ultimately achieve better profitability. Part of the feedstock supplied to the company via the Abuzar pipeline — which contains heavier components including propane, butane and organic compounds — was not supplied for about three months of the year, and for about four months production could reach only 50 percent. For this reason, we have fallen behind somewhat in LPG and sulfur production; however, actual methanol production compared with nameplate capacity has been over 94 percent, and with the onset of the cool and cold season, we hope production conditions will improve.

Regarding the company’s development projects, the CEO said: the contract for the synthetic ethanol project was signed about a month and a half ago and its ratification was completed in the past two weeks. Currently technical meetings between the licensor’s technical team and Kharg Petrochemical’s engineering team are underway and follow-up is continuous. It is expected that implementation work on the project will begin by the end of the summer of 2026.

It can be said that with execution of this project, after 20 years a fundamental transformation will occur at Kharg Petrochemical. At the same time, maintaining the company’s share value depends on desirable and stable production, which remains a main priority.

Pourziaei also commented on exports: he noted that in the cold season both demand and prices are naturally better. Kharg Petrochemical has not experienced a decline in exports to date and has managed to keep its market share. It should be noted that production has decreased this year for the reasons mentioned; nevertheless, all production has been allocated to exports. Thus, despite the unfair sanctions, export performance so far has been successful and exports have been carried out well. If any new restrictions arise, the company will overcome these challenges by applying appropriate measures and, by ensuring stable feedstock, will achieve better production.
