The CHU unit flare gas recycling project, part of a series of energy management and flaring reduction projects, was put into operation in the presence of Zandieh Vakili, Markazi General Governor and CEO of Shazand Petrochemical Company, and a group of other provincial and city managers and officials. At this ceremony, Zandieh Vakili, praised Shazand Petrochemical Company’s actions in the field of social responsibilities, especially in the environmental field.
Zandiyeh Vakili added Markazi province, especially the cities of Arak and Shazand, is in an area where its people are insecure in terms of pollution, and every small step towards reducing this problem helps the people’s mental security and health. He stated the province is the capital of Iran’s industry, and industrial units must take great steps towards environmental issues. He noted that there is a need to improve environmental standards in the province’s industrial units, and efforts in this direction are essential.
Zandiyeh Vakili said that Shazand Petrochemical has been taking great strides in the environmental field for years, and this path should be faster and increasing day by day.
Abbas Karami, the CEO of Shazand Petrochemical, also stated that this industrial unit began its activities in 1993 and, with a nominal production capacity of 1.65 million tons per year, is one of the largest and most diverse petrochemical companies in the country and even the Middle East. He said that the annual sales of this industrial unit are about 950 thousand tons, and this year it has reached a remarkable figure of 400 trillion rials.
He said this company has a special place in the country’s petrochemical industry by producing diverse and exclusive products, and some of the products produced are exclusive to this company. The CEO of Shazand Petrochemical Company further noted that since 1993, advanced technologies have been used in this company, and on average, every seven years, a new technology in the petrochemical industry has been inaugurated.
Karimi referred to the company’s environmental initiatives and said in recent years, numerous projects have been carried out to protect the region’s environment, and one of these projects is gas recycling, which produces 35 tons of recycled gas daily, which is equivalent to the gas consumption of seven thousand households and contributes significantly to reducing the gas imbalance in the country.
At this ceremony, the Deputy Director of Production and Head of Shazand Petrochemical Complex said, based on the initial design of the 4-carbon hydrogenation unit (CHU) and the nature of the reaction in the reactor, about 5,000 tons of unusable hydrocarbons were sent to the flare and burned annually from this unit. This project was implemented to recycle this gas flow sent to the flare so that, while preventing flaring and environmental pollution, the gas can be used as fuel in steam production boilers and replace natural gas received from the national grid. Hossein Asgari added that as a result of the implementation of this project, the CHU unit flare gas flow will be cut off, and instead of being burned in the flare, it will replace part of the natural gas and be used as fuel in the complex’s steam production boilers, reducing the consumption of gas received from the national grid.
According to this report, the “Zero Flaring” mega project to control polluted flares entered a new phase with the opening of the environmental project “CHU Flare Gas Recycling,” and thus more than 95 percent of the flares in the Shazand Petrochemical Complex were turned off, which is a big step towards social and environmental responsibility programs
