Hormoz Aali Daie, one of the managers of Moghan Wire and Cable Company, has said the company produces a relatively complete range of products that are used in various industries, including the construction industry, oil and gas industry, energy industry, and development industries. He made the comment during an interview at the company’s pavilion at the 24th International Exhibition of the Iranian Electricity Industry.
He further added that the cables used in the oil, gas, refining, and petrochemical industries include low-pressure cables, medium-pressure cables, and instrument cables. According to him, the low-voltage cable has a voltage of 0.6 kV, but it has many structural variations, and normally low-voltage power cables are used in oil, gas, refining, and petrochemical companies with lead coating because these power cables must be resistant to petroleum hydrocarbons. But in the case of medium-pressure cables, depending on their application, they can have a lead coating or a coating of materials that burn and do not produce smoke and halogen acid.
He said the oil industry also uses data transmission cables for instruments. These data transmission cables now have their lead sheath replaced with a multi-layer sheet due to the environmental problems of lead; that is, instead of using a lead sheath, an aluminum layer is used, which does not have the harmful effects of lead. He said the second feature that is highly requested in instrument cables is that they are resistant to fire, smoke, and halogen acids.
Referring to the special use of silicone cables in the oil, gas, refining, and petrochemical industries, he noted that one of the precision instrument cables used in the oil, gas, refining, and petrochemical industries is silicone-insulated cables. That’s because in many cases the cables have to be buried in hot environments. Therefore, these insulations are limited in terms of temperature; for example, cables with PVC insulation cannot withstand more than 80 degrees of heat, while silicone is heat resistant and can withstand temperatures up to 180 degrees. Therefore, silicone cables are installed in places where the temperature is high. These silicone cables have variety and, together with mica, can resist fire for a period of time or can be used with halogen-free cables for polymer coatings. He also noted that the company produces marine and submarine cables.
The director of Moghan Wire and Cable Company highlighted the fact that in the cables supplied for the oil, gas, refining, and petrochemical industries, lead has been replaced with aluminum in instrument cables, as well as silicon in instrument cables by using mica. Furthermore, insulating layers are now used that can resist fire and withstand fire conditions for 1.5 hours in accidents without short circuit or power cut.
Aali Da’i pointed out that the cables produced by the company have a wide range of customers in the oil, gas, refining, and petrochemical industries. It also provides them with the cables they need either directly or indirectly through E&P companies. He added that the main customers of Moghan wire and cable in the oil and gas industry are Petropars, Oil Industries Engineering and Construction Group (OIEC), Iran Oil Pipelines and Telecommunications Company (IOPTC), National Iranian South Oil Company (NISOC), Iranian Offshore Oil Company (IOOC), and National Iranian Drilling Company (NIDC). He also said Mogham Company is working with Oil Industries Commissioning and Operation Company (OICO), National Iranian Oil Engineering and Construction Company (NIOEC) in the reconstruction of El Palito refinery in Venezuela, South Pars Gas Complex, Bidboland Gas Refining Company, Hoveyzeh Gas Refining Company of the Persian Gulf, and many other companies.
He said the customers in the refining and petrochemical industry include Tehran refinery, Tabriz refinery, Shazand refinery, Isfahan refinery, Bandar Abbas oil refinery, Persian Gulf Star refinery, Abadan refinery, Sepahan Oil Company, Shiraz Petrochemical, Bandar Imam Petrochemical, and Petrochemical. He named Jam, Tabriz Petrochemical, Zagros Petrochemical, Khark Petrochemical, Buali Sina Petrochemical, Bushehr Petrochemical, Kavian Petrochemical, and others.
He said in Iran the companies that produce especially special cables such as medium, high voltage, extra high voltage, and instrument cables have had to undergo a type test, which is a certificate in accordance with the applicable standard of the cable itself, but must be tested by a third party. The type tests of all cables, including precision instruments, 230 V, 132 V, 63 V, and medium with 30 V, were previously issued by the Dutch company KEMA, and after the sanctions, a company from Croatia named KONČAR issued certificates for cables.
Regarding the export of wire and cable products, he noted that the company started its export 25 years ago by exporting to Afghanistan. In the last few years, it also started to export its products to Iraq. It has also developed its export market to CIS countries and several other countries, such as Pakistan, Turkey, Syria, Yemen, the UAE, Oman, Sri Lanka, and Tanzania. This year, the company was selected as the best exporter of 2024, and in the past years, it won various export statues. Last year, it exported more than 15 million dollars, and considering that each kilo of copper as the main raw material costs about 10 dollars, it is not a large amount, but it has the possibility to export more.
He said currently, the cables exported to Afghanistan are wire cables and construction cables, and the company has the monopoly of that country’s market. In Iraq, the company mainly supplies low- and medium-voltage industrial cables, and it has even exported some marine cables to this country. The company plans to have a stronger presence in the supply of Iraqi construction and industrial cables, especially in high voltage cables and oil and gas industry cables, and strengthen its foothold. He noted that the company still does not have a place in the Iraqi oil and gas industry, and it is necessary to solve a series of problems because oil and gas companies mainly work through LC, and Iran cannot use that due to the sanctions.
Aali Da’i pointed out that Moghan Wire and Cable Company has four thermal power generation units from natural gas and added that each of these four units produces 500 kilowatts and a total of 2 megawatts of electricity, which is injected into the national electricity grid. The only advantage of the company is that during the power outage in the summer season, it will still have the capacity to run. He noted that with some assistance from the government in the field of renewable energy, the company can certainly enter this new field as well. He further said that Moghan Wire and Cable Company is one of the few companies that has removed lead in the production of cables, which included this company in the group of environmentally friendly industries.
