Fanavaran Petrochemical’s Pioneering in sustainable development and innovation though CO2 recovery project

Fanavaran Petrochemical’s CO2 recovery project — aimed at capturing flue gases from reformer furnaces and reusing carbon dioxide in the methanol value chain and other downstream products — is one of the strategic projects for green development in the country’s petrochemical industry.

The environmental project to recover CO2 from the flue gases of the methanol unit’s reformer furnace — for a plant with a nameplate capacity of 160,000 tons per year — is being carried out as one of Fanavaran Petrochemical’s sustainable development initiatives and has reached 32% physical completion.

This project aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions and recover carbon dioxide for use in downstream processes, making it a flagship environmental initiative for the company.

Currently the project’s engineering work is 78% complete and equipment procurement is 20% complete. All fixed and rotating equipment have been identified, ordered, and contractual agreements with manufacturers finalized; fabrication documents are being completed.

The project team reports that with timely funding injections; the physical progress will increase significantly.

According to data presented during a site visit, construction and installation are 47% complete. Major completed activities include construction of most equipment foundations (civil work), erection of the main structural steel for the central area of the unit (where process equipment will be installed), and building the steel structure for the branch line from the methanol unit stack that will serve as the project’s feed line.

Also, fabrication and installation of six tanks are finished; these tanks are now at the nozzle-installation stage and being prepared for hydrostatic testing.

During the visit, Dr. Hossein Rafighdoust, CEO of Fanavaran Petrochemical, accompanied by his team, inspected the project site, spoke with managers and technical staff, and was updated on the latest technical, financial, and execution status of the project.

The project’s EPC contractor is a top-tier company in the oil, gas, and petrochemical industries, and overall project supervision (MC) is handled by a leading, highly ranked consultant. Technical inspections are being carried out continuously by a reputable third‑party inspection firm.

Fanavaran Petrochemical’s CO2 recovery project — aimed at capturing flue gases from reformer furnaces and reusing carbon dioxide in the methanol value chain and other downstream products — is one of the strategic projects for green development in the country’s petrochemical industry. Completing this project will significantly reduce air pollutant emissions, increase process efficiency, improve environmental indicators, and create added value across the production chain.
